Warrant of Commission (Quarter Master) for William Picton

This warrant dated 9 December 1752 appoints William Picton to the rank of Quarter Master in the 12th Regiment of Foot (Suffolk) commanded by Lieutenant General Henry Skelton. William Picton rose to the rank of Major General in the 12th Regiment of Foot and fought at the Siege of Gibraltar in 1782. He was awarded the freedom of the burgh of Forres in 1764.

The document is part of the JLM Mitchell Archive of the Gaelic Society of Inverness. Sheriff James Lachlan Martin Mitchell (b. 13 June 1929) was a native of Inverness and son of well-known doctor, Lachlan Mitchell. He was appointed full-time sheriff in Edinburgh in 1978 and served there until his retirement in 1995. He died on 26 November 2001
