Freedom of the Burgh of Forres Certificate for William Picton, 1764

This certificate dated 4 June 1764 appoints Major William Picton of the 12th Regiment of Foot a Burgess and Freeman of the Burgh of Forres. It is signed by John Peterkin, Clerk. William Picton rose to the rank of Major General in the 12th Regiment of Foot and fought at the Siege of Gibraltar in 1782.

The document is part of the JLM Mitchell Archive of the Gaelic Society of Inverness. Sheriff James Lachlan Martin Mitchell (b. 13 June 1929) was a native of Inverness and son of well-known doctor, Lachlan Mitchell. He was appointed full-time sheriff in Edinburgh in 1978 and served there until his retirement in 1995. He died on 26 November 2001
