The Lovat Scouts were a British Army unit formed in January 1900 by Simon Joseph Fraser, 14th Lord Lovat, for service in the Second Boer War. The unit saw extensive action during the First World War, including at Gallipoli, on the Western Front, and in Macedonia and Egypt. During the Second World War, the Unit was garrisoned in the Faroe Islands, but eventually saw action in Italy.

The School of Musketry was established in Hythe, Kent in 1854. Those who attended were instructed in the use of small arms.
