Herring Fishing fleet in Ullapool Bay

A photograph of a herring fishing fleet anchored at Ullapool Bay, in Wester Ross. Ullapool was originally established in the late 18th century as a herring port, and indeed flourished as such. However, in 1797 the herring failed to arrive in Loch Broom. This pattern repeated itself in subsequent years, causing the British Fisheries Society to sell the village in 1847 for £5000.

Today the local fishing fleet catch Norway Lobsters (prawns), lobsters, scallops and crabs and the pier remains the focal point of the village.
