Three men in a boat on Loch Maree

Three men in a boat on Loch Maree. Aili Fada, a ghillie, is on the oars.

Loch Maree is between Kinlochewe and Gairloch. It is over 12 miles long and just over 2 miles wide at its widest point. The name commemorates St Maelrubha who came over from Ireland and founded a monastery at Applecross in 671AD. On one of the many islands stand the ruins of a chapel also established by St Maelrubha. Two thirds of the loch is flanked by mountains, including Slioch at 3,220ft. The south-west shore forms part of the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve.
