D Company of the Ross-shire Buffs

A photograph of D Company of the Ross-shire Buffs, more commonly known as the Seaforth Highlanders. It appears that the photograph may have been taken at a camp near Nottingham.

The 78th Regiment of Foot was a Highland Light Infantry regiment raised by the Earl of Seaforth in 1778. In 1795 it was renamed the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot, or "The Ross-shire Buffs".

The original Buffs were the Royal East Kent Regiment, formerly the 3rd Regiment of Foot, who were so-named because of their soft leather buff coats and buff facings.
