A horse-drawn lifeboat - The Charley Lloyd

A lifeboat being drawn behind a team of horses.

This is the lifeboat "Charley Lloyd". Costing £284, she was funded from a legacy left by Charles Lloyd of Kennington, London. The "Charley Lloyd" was in service between 1871 and 1890 during which time she was launched on 31 occasions and saved 255 lives.

Situated on the Pentland Firth in the sheltered Thurso Bay, Thurso is the most northerly town on the Scottish mainland. Thurso is a long established town with origins dating back to Viking times when it was an important Norse settlement and the major gateway to mainland Scotland.
