Beached whales on Thurso Sands

This photograph shows a capture of whales at Thurso Bay on the Pentland Firth, on 19 June 1899. A school of whales drifted into the bay and six boats were sent out from Thurso to round them up. After a six hour battle, a school numbering 104 were driven into shallow water and speared.

Situated on the Pentland Firth in the sheltered Thurso Bay, Thurso is the most northerly town on the Scottish mainland. Thurso is a long established town with origins dating back to Viking times when it was an important Norse settlement and the major gateway to mainland Scotland.
