Poster advertising local council elections, burgh of Inverness, 1842

Poster advertising local council elections in the burgh of Inverness, 19th October, 1842.

Five of the members are up for re-election and advice is given not to elect these five men who are accused of various wrongdoings including not reducing the exorbitant fees at one of the local schools - Dr Bell's School. Built in 1839-41, this school originally operated on the 'Madras' system. In this system the teachers taught the most intelligent boys who in turn taught the less intelligent. Dr Andrew Bell of Egmont, the school's founder, was a staunch supporter of the system. The school building now houses Inverness Public Library
