Strathspey and Reel Societies have been a common feature of the traditional music scene in Scotland since the formation of the first society in Edinburgh in 1881. The Highland branch was formed in 1903. One of its founder members, Alexander Grant (also known as 'Battan') was leader of the society right up until his death in 1942, a period of almost forty years.
This programme (page 2) is for a 'Competition in Strathspey and Reel Playing, on the fiddle and piano, in the Town Hall [Inverness] on Friday, 15th December, 1905, at 8p.m.' This page lists the competitors
