Strathspey and Reel Societies have been a common feature of the traditional music scene in Scotland since the formation of the first society in Edinburgh in 1881. The Highland branch was formed in 1903. One of its founder members, Alexander Grant (also known as 'Battan') was leader of the society right up until his death in 1942, a period of almost forty years.
This letter (page 3) to the Highland branch from Mr. B.G. Hoare, dated 21 October 1927, refers to a sum of money donated to the society for the establishment of a competition in 'Strathspeys and Reels'. It is Mr. Hoare's opinion that the society decline the offer; the donor adds too many restrictive conditions. Mr. Hoare concludes by conjecturing whether the donor is, in fact, a local celebrity
