This letter was written by Donald Walter Cameron of Lochiel at Maida Barracks, Aldershot, to Lady Hermione Cameron at Buchanan Castle, Drymen on 6 September 1914. The following is a transcript of the parts of the letter which relate to the war:

...I have lost my little gold match box. Did I leave it at Buchanan? It had on from AVFVR, If not at Buchanan would you write & enquire if left

a) In the Portree Hotel, Portree
b) In the Royal Hotel, Inverness
c) In the sleeping car on the 10.45 p.m. train south from Glasgow Friday night

Please tell your father I am going to take on his friend McLellan. Is it not awful about the Gordons & Argylls.

Poor Alex Maclain missing & Robert Bruce. Lumsden's brother killed & 21 Gordon officers missing.
