Strathspey and Reel Societies have been a common feature of the traditional music scene in Scotland since the formation of the first society in Edinburgh in 1881. The Highland branch was formed in 1903. One of its founder members, Alexander Grant (also known as 'Battan') was leader of the society right up until his death in 1942, a period of almost forty years.
This letter dated 22 December 1936 is from the Highland branch Assistant Leader, Mr. D. Morison of Beauly, to 'John' (probably John Fraser, Secretary). Mr. Morison mentions three pieces of music; 'Castle Grant', 'The Duchess of Edinburgh' (march), and the 'John McNeill Reel'
