Hand-Written Set List for Highland Strathspey & Reel Society

Strathspey and Reel Societies have been a common feature of the traditional music scene in Scotland since the formation of the first society in Edinburgh in 1881. The Highland branch was formed in 1903. One of its founder members, Alexander Grant (also known as 'Battan') was leader of the society right up until his death in 1942, a period of almost forty years.

This hand-written list of tunes is part of the Grant collection. It may have been put together for a society concert performance. It contains many familiar Scottish tunes including 'Macpherson's Lament', and [Reel of] 'Tullochgorm'
