Duncan Macpherson set up his pharmacy in Kyle of Lochalsh in 1912 and supplied not only medicines and other chemist related items such as toothbrushes and shampoos, but also tourist information, postcards and photographic materials. Letters, postcards and informal notes were used to request goods, as well as Post Office Telegraphs.

As the National Health Service did not exist at the time, people were more likely to treat themselves rather than pay to see a doctor. The local pharmacist provided medication, advice and a certain amount of information, and substances such as Epsom Salts were popular remedies for a variety of ailments
