Charter of Alienation in favour of William of Bught, 1449 (Back)

A Charter of Alienation transfers or conveys titles or property to another. This charter by Andrew Graham, burgess of Inverness, transfers an acre of land in the Gairbread (to the northeast of the town beyond Rose Street) to William of Bught. It is dated 20 July 1449 and is granted with the consent of Andrew Graham's wife, Elizabeth, and Donald, his son and heir. The charter is claimed to be the first Scots written document connected to Inverness.

In his 1875 publication, 'Invernessiana: Contributions Toward a History of the Town and Parish of Inverness, from 1160 to 1599' (pp 116-117), Charles Fraser-Mackintosh transcribes the document thus:
