Preparatory Instruction for Cadets 2

Preparatory instruction to persons who may be nominated direct cadets.

This handwritten document, dated 23 May 1856, gives guidance for candidates. A high standard of education is required, including the rules of arithmetic, the first three books of Euclid, and the ability to translate from Latin and French into English, though candidates have the option of translating from Hindi instead of French.

Knowledge of the history of Greece and Rome is required, together with that of British India. The candidate is expected to have a good grasp of geography, especially of Europe and Asia, including the chief cities in Hindustan. Knowledge of fortification is also required.

The document forms part of a collection of papers of Alexander Mackintosh of Farr, who served with the army in India.
