Sir John's Square, Thurso, c1900

Sir John's Square gardens given to the town by Sir John George Tollemache Sinclair, 3rd Baronet, grandson of Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster.

In 1798, Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster laid out the new town of Thurso, to the west and south of the old town. Sinclair was a prominent nobleman whose achievements included the compilation of the First Statistical Account of Scotland. A statue sits within the gardens at Sir John's Square, in remembrance to him.

Situated on the Pentland Firth, Thurso is the most northerly town on the Scottish mainland. It is a long established town with origins dating back to Viking times when it was an important Norse settlement, the major gateway to mainland Scotland.
