A black and white photograph of the Portgower mill, near Helmsdale.

Portgower is a small crofting and fishing village, located along the A9 north, although fishing has not been a mainstay for some decades. It was built in the nineteenth century at the behest of the Duke of Sutherland as a clearance village. The Duke employed a French factor to undertake the project, and this man set about designing a compact village following a grid system employed by villages in rural France.
