This photograph of Lachlan Martin Victor Mitchell was taken by the Inverness photographer David Whyte. It dates from 1890 when the young Lachlan was presented with kilt and hose by the Skye poetess, Mrs Mary MacPherson (Màiri Mhòr nan Oran), a promise made by her when the child was baptised. Lachlan went on to become a well known Inverness doctor. The photograph is part of the JLM Mitchell Archive of the Gaelic Society of Inverness. Lachlan was Mitchell's father.

Sheriff James Lachlan Martin Mitchell (b. 13 June 1929) was a native of Inverness. He was appointed full-time sheriff in Edinburgh in 1978 and served there until his retirement in 1995. He died on 26 November 2001
