The Free Church on Church Street, Fortrose, was designed by Donald Matheson of Strathpeffer in 1909. The plan is signed by John Hossack, Dean of Guild.

Plans for new buildings or alterations to existing ones had to be submitted to the Dean of Guild court for approval. A guild was a group of merchants who were influential citizens in the burgh, and their president, known as the Dean, had a role similar to that of a magistrate
