The Cuillin hills are a mountain range on the south of Skye. The highest of the peaks is Sgurr Alasdair at 3258ft. The main Cuillin ridge is only seven miles in length but takes and average of 15-20 hours to complete, although the current record stands at 3½ hours. The Cuillin are often divided into two groups. The Black Cuillin are mainly made up of gabro and basalt rock while the Red Cuillin are made of red granite.
Mary Ethel Muir Donaldson was born in 1876 and came to the Highlands around 1908. She travelled extensively round the north and west Highlands writing and taking photographs. She died in 1958. This photograph is part of her collection
