Tha a' chuibhreann chlaistinneach seo on leabhar fèin-eachdraidheil aig Ùisdean Mac a' Mhuilleir (Hugh Miller) 'My Schools and Schoolmasters', foillsichte an toiseach an 1854. Tha e air a leughadh an seo le Tormod Newton.

'I began by getting into a corner at the dismissal of the school, and there conning over to myself the new-found story of Joseph; nor did one perusal serve; the other Scripture stories followed - in especial, the story of Samson and the Philistines, of David and Goliath, of the prohets Elijah and Elisha; and after these came the New Testament stories and parables. Assisted by my uncles, I began to collect a library in a box of birch-bark about nine inches square, which I found quite large enough to contain a great many immortal works - Jack the Giant-Killer, and Jack and the Bean-Stalk, and the Yellow Dwarf, the Blue Beard, and Sinbad the Sailor, and Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, with several others of resembling character. Those intolerable nuisances the useful-knowledge books had not yet arisen, like tenebrious stars, on the education horizon, to darken the world, and shed their blighting influence on the opening intellect of the "youth-hood"; and so, from my rudimental books - books that made themselves truly such by their thorough assimilation with the rudimental mind - I passed on, without being conscious of break or line of division, to books on which the learned are content to write commentaries and dissertations, but which I found to be quite as nice children's books as any of the others.'

Rugadh is thogadh Ùisdean Mac a' Mhuilleir (Hugh Miller) ann an Cromba. Aig aois 16 chaidh e na phreantas aig clachair, dreuchd a lean e fad 17 bliadhna às dèidh sin. Dh'fhàs an ùidh aige ann am fosailean agus bhiodh e a' rannsachadh chumaidhean-tìre an Eilein Duibh, a' leughadh gu farsainn, gus am b' e fear de na h-eòlaichean a b' ainmeile air saidheansan ùra eòlas-sheann-chnàimhean agus eòlas-chreagan. Sgrìobh e cuideachd artaigil an siud 's an seo don 'Inverness Courier'.

Thàinig Ùisdean a bhith gu dubh an sàs ann am poilitigs na h-eaglaise agus 's e am prìomh neach-naidheachd air Briseadh na h-Eaglaise, na fhear-deasachaidh air 'The Witness' o 1835 gu àm a bhàis. Mharbh e e fhèin le gunna na dhachaigh ann am Portobello ann an 1859 ann an suidheachadh neo-chinnteach, le cuid ag ràdh gu robh rudan ag obair air, coltach ri tinneas eanchainne, fìor sgìths, lionn-dubh agus 's dòcha neo-chomas a bhith a' freagairt a shaidheans ri a chreideamhan cràbhach.

Tha an taigh-còmhnaidh beag ann an Cromba far an d' rugadh e (Hugh Miller's Cottage), an-diugh fo chùram Urras Nàiseanta na h-Alba agus tha taigh-tasgaidh ann de a bheatha agus de obair.
