'In the summer time when we wis going till school - at's before the school wis closed - we all wore wur bare feet. Everybody took - seemed to be a done thing - ye took your boots off an ye went to school in your bare feet. An your feet got hardened into the road, ye never felt it. An the funny thing wis the harder ye walked on the road - it wis a rough road then - ye never felt it, it wisnae sore at all, but if ye walked too - an started lookin for bits'll - good bits'll go on - it seemed to be much sorer. But then when we went back till e school maybe, we went back till e school aboot e third or fourth o September.

Now, if it came wet weather, we wisnae allowed in the shop, because we hid our bare feet an it made the floor o the shop - it wis a wooden floor at wis in the shop - an it made it ower o mud an whatnot. So the shop wis banned an the next that we knew wis we'd to put wur boots on, because the shopkeeper discovered at there wis nobody comin into the shop an he's - well, he's thirty or forty pennies an it wis a bit in at days - an he seen he's, he wisnae making an awful lot oot e scholars so he put down word till e schoolmaster till get them equipped wi boots again'
