'My name is Isma Munro, formerly MacAndrew. I was born in Braemar on the twenty-fourth of May, 1921. When we knew war was approaching it was arranged that evacuees would come from Glasgow. They actually arrived on the Friday before war was declared and on the previous day a group of us gathered at the village hall and filled carrier bags with items for these evacuees. I can't remember all that we put in the bags but I know there were various packets of biscuits and a tin of bully beef and a tin of carnation milk. I'm afraid I don't remember what else. Now, on the day war was declared we seemed to be listening to the radio all day and the National Anthem was played frequently. Staying with us at the time was a friend who was on holiday and every time the National Anthem was played she stood to attention and the rest of us felt it incumbent upon us to do the same and I can assure you we got plenty of exercise that day.'
