'During the early years of the war I was a student and the only kind of holidays we could afford in those days were with a bicycle and a tent. A friend and I were on, just on one such holiday when cycling along between Perth and Stirling we came upon a sergeant-major ill-treating a group of recruits. He was bawling at them and actually striking them and kicking them in the rear end. We got off our bicycles and got great satisfaction by shouting all sorts of things at him and calling him names and a brute and all sorts of things, and we also told him what these boys' mothers would have done to him had they known how he was treating their offspring.'
