Neach-ceasnachaidh: What was Ullapool like in the war?

Màiri: Well, Ullapool was really very quiet during the war. the worst part of it was when one of the boys would get killed and word would come. And I think it was brought home to my generation, in school, very early on, when a boy that had been in school, and he was only eighteen, and he was training to be a pilot and he and his instructor were knocked down and both killed. And George MacKenzie - he lived on Custom House Street - and I can still see his funeral cortege going down Ladysmith Street, that's a military funeral, and I was absolutely delighted to see that the local boys and the young airmen put a wreath on his grave at the back of the museum.

Dòmhnall: He was Ullapool's first casualty.

Màiri: He was the first casualty.
