Why is it important to study the past? - Steve Murdoch

Mar phàirt de Thilleadh Dhachaigh 2009, chaidh co-labhairt eadar-nàiseanta trì latha - Buaidh Chruinneil na h-Alba - a chumail ann an Taigh-chluiche Eden Court, Inbhir Nis, bho 22-24 Dàmhair. Thàinig sgoilearan, eachdraichean is eòlaichean eile còmhla gus deasbaireachd fhallain a bhrosnachadh mu eachdraidh imrich agus a' bhuaidh a bha aig muinntir na h-Alba thall-thairis.

Rinn Am Baile agallamhan le grunn luchd-labhairt rè na co-labhairt. San earrainn chlaistinnich seo, tha an Dr Steve Murdoch a' freagairt na ceiste:

"Nad bheachd-sa, carson a tha e cudromach an t-àm a chaidh seachad a rannsachadh?"

'So that we can learn from it and not make similar mistakes to our forbears. So that we can enrich our present by learning all about the past, and showing that Scottish history is neither a smug place where we overly congratulate ourselves on how good we are at everything, nor a series of catastrophic failures. So that we can find out exactly how we came to be where we are today, and how we have improved from, or are failing to live up to, the past.'

'S e Leughadair ann an Eachdraidh na h-Alba aig Oilthigh Chill Rìmhinn a th' ann an Dtr Steve Murdoch. Am measg ùidhean a rannsachaidh tha às-imrich o Bhreatainn san t-seachdamh linn deug agus a h-uile seòrsa eadar-ghnìomhachas eadar Alba thràth ùr-nodha agus an saoghal mòr. Tha e air mòran fhoillseachadh air a' chuspair sin agus am measg a phrìomh fhoillseachaidhean tha: 'Britain, Denmark-Norway and the House of Stuart 1603-1660' (East Linton: Tuckwell Press, 2000/2003) agus 'Network North: Scottish Kin Commercial and Covert Associations in Northern Europe, 1603-1746' (Leiden: Brill, 2006). Am measg a phrìomh chruinneachaidhean a tha deasaichte tha 'Scotland and the Thirty Years War, 1618-1648' (Leiden: Brill, 2001) agus còmhla ri Alexia Grosjean, 'Scottish Communities Abroad in the Early Modern Period' (Leiden: Brill, 2005). Cuideachd còmhla ri Alexia Grosjean tha e air an fhoillseachadh a fhuair cliù mòr a dhèanamh: 'Scotland, Scandinavia and Northern European Biographical Database.'
