'Fortrose was a difficult place to operate from because you'd a very steep incline right at the end of the station platform, you started to climb and if you were using, or if you had a heavy goods - timber or livestock - then you didn't get a sufficient start and you did use a lot of sand. The older type engine, the type of sanding apparatus that was on them, in many cases, if it were not used properly, sometimes held you up more than help you because it was putting on too much sand. Eventually steam sanding came in and this was, of course it was newer and it was much more efficient.

Another thing going up from Fortrose you had trees overhanging the railway. This, if it was wet, you had the juice which tended to make the rail slippery, more slippery than if it were dry'
