Grant preserving rights & privileges of Inverness, 1457 (Back)

Ann an cùmhnant on 12mh den Dàmhair 1457, tha an Rìgh Seumas ll a' dearbhadh nan sochairean a chaidh a bhuileachadh air burgh Bhaile Dhubhthaich ('Tain and St Duthac'). Ged a chaidh sochairean aig borgh Inbhir Nis a dheagh dhearbhadh san sgrìobhainn seo, thàinig air an rìgh ath-dhearbhadh dhiubh a dhèanamh ann an cùmhnant eile [os cionn seo] deich làithean às dèidh sin, am 22mh Dàmhair.

Tha an dealbh a' sealltainn cùlaibh na sgrìobhainn.

Ann am foillseachadh bho 1875 aig Teàrlach Friseal-Mac anTòisich, 'Invernessiana: Contributions Toward a History of the Town and Parish of Inverness, from 1160 to 1599' (dg 136), tha an sgrìobhainn air eadar-theangachadh on Laidinn thùsail mar seo:

[Airson beag-fhaclair de chuid de na briathran air an cleachdadh ann an sgrìobhainnean bhuirgh Inbhir Nis, feuch an lean sibh an ceangal faisg air bonn na duilleige seo.]

'James by the grace of God King of Scots, to all good men of his whole realm, cleric and laic; Greeting: Know that we have approved, ratified, and confirmed the infeftments and concessions made by our predecessors, Kings of Scots, to the collegiate church of St Duthac and the chaplains and clerics thereof, and to others inhabiting the town of Tain, with the immunity granted them within the four angular crosses around the limits and bounds of the said town, and the liberties and privileges also granted them by our said ancestors: It never was, nor is it, our intention by this to create any prejudice to ourselves or our burgh of Inverness, or our burgesses, thereof in our great or small customs, liberties, or privileges, granted to our said burgesses or our burgh of Inverness by our predecessors Kings of Scots beyond the recollection of memory; nay, rather but to preserve unencumbered and unimpaired the rights, liberties, privileges, and infeftments of said burgh of Inverness, and of our burgesses thereof, according as they were infefted free and unhurt in and by all means, and we have and do confirm them by these presents: Wherefore we straitly command and charge all and sundry our lieges and subjects, that no one in contravention of the liberty of said burgh of Inverness, and of the burgesses thereof, sell, exercise, merchandize, or infringe their privileges, or presume to attempt any thing in contravention of their infeftments in future times, under all the pain which they shall incur towards our royal laws. Given under our great seal at Edinburgh the 22d day of the month of October, in the year of the Lord 1457, and of our reign the 21st.'
