Bank of Scotland Cheque

This image shows the reverse of cheque number S 70760, received by Messrs Macrae and Dick in payment from a customer, J.C. Gordon. The cheque shows a guarantee of endorsement by the Bank of Scotland, Union Street, Inverness. The bank was situated on Union Street from the early twentieth century until recent years, with its headquarters at High Street.

The firm Macrae & Dick was created by Roderick Macrae, a horse hirer from Beauly, and William George Dick of Redcastle. They set up business in Inverness in 1878 as postmasters and horse hirers. When motor cars arrived they set part of their original premises on Academy Street aside for hiring and selling cars. Today, Macrae & Dick is still a major provider of vehicles throughout Scotland.
