Concept and Background

Am Baile was founded by a consortium led by The Highland Council. Together with our partners Taigh Chearsabhagh Trust and West Highland Animation we are creating a digital archive of the history and culture of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The project has been funded by the New Opportunities Fund and recently assisted with a financial contribution from Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Highlands and Islands ENTERPRISE

The site was launched in May 2003 and is still growing. It offers learning opportunities for users of all age groups, abilities and backgrounds by drawing together unique material which until now was difficult to access and presenting it in a user-friendly and often exciting way. Am Baile includes photographs, rare books and documents from archives, libraries, museums and private collections, contemporary art, films, interactive games and comics.

Gaelic language resource

Presenting the culture and heritage of the Scottish Highlands and Islands in the Gaelic language, and providing a new resource for Gaelic speakers and learners, are key objectives of the Am Baile project. The site can be used in Gaelic and English with an option of switching language at any time.
