Celts, Picts & Norse
INTRODUCTION
Celts, Picts and Norsemen may be lost in the mists of time, but their influence lives on in the Highlands and Islands. Prehistoric monuments, many of Celtic origin, litter the Highland landscape. Pictish placenames like Pitglassie or Pitlochry remain, though time has often obscured their meaning. Not so Gaelic or Norse placenames, their meanings are well known and so descriptive of place or feature.
Still to the fore and lively up to this present time is the Gaelic language. The Nordic accent of the people of the Northern Isles remains too, though many of the old Norse words have been lost.
Nor have the looks of the 'Highlander' vanished. The dark-haired swarthy Celtic appearance is very much a feature in many of the clans, as are the tall fair-haired Nordic types.
Without doubt, centuries of migration and change have much enriched Highland culture and environment.
