Farming

6. The school at Balmacara

print page

This house on the shores of Loch Alsh, dates from around 1801. It is depicted in an 1818 aquatint engraving by William Daniell. Sir Hugh Innes, who made his fortune in the West Indies, owned the Estate in the early part of the 19th century. By the middle of the century it had been sold to Sir Alexander Matheson and then to Sir Daniel and Lady Hamilton. On her death in 1946, the House and Estate were bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland, although the House is presently used by the Royal Navy. After the War the Home Farm was run as a boarding school for crofters' sons interested in agriculture.
