3. Fishing boats at Ullapool

print page

Ullapool was originally established in the late 18th century as a herring port. Today the local fishing fleet catch mackerel, prawns, lobsters, scallops and crabs and the pier remains the focal point of the village. In the !980s factory ships came from Eastern Bloc countries such as Russia and Poland. Thes ships, or klondykers as they were called, used to anchor in Lochbroom over the winter. Local boats sold their mackerel and herring catch to them for processing and export.
