5. Spinning and carding

print page

A group of women outside a thatched house. The location and photographer are unknown . In many communities, women met to share the work of spinning and weaving. Note the traditional dress of the women with a white 'mutch' as headgear and a shawl around the shoulders.

Two women are spinning while a third, on the left of the photograph, is carding wool. She is using cards, wooden blocks with handles and metal teeth to comb the raw wool. Carding is the process of working wool between two boards ('cards') set with metal pins. This straightened and separated the fibres and prepared them for spinning
