A Scramble at a Highland Wedding

This photograph provoked lots of discussion and brought back memories for many of us. It shows Inverness children scrambling for the handful of coins traditionally thrown to them at weddings. It's not exclusively a Highland custom, and there are several regional variations. In Inverness, it's known as a "scramble". One person, from the village of Avoch, a few miles north of Inverness, remembered it as a "scrammie". Yet another, from Edinburgh, recalls participating in many a "puir-oot" (pour-out). And one astute colleague discovered at an early age the financial benefits of touring the local churches on Saturdays.

Some of us identified with the two small boys watching enviously as the bigger children pocketed their takings. But we are ashamed to confess that some of our team had absolutely no qualms about elbowing smaller children out of the way ...
