Archibald Campbell of Inverneill (1739-1791) served in the Seven Years War, the American Revolution and in India but his career as a distinguished soldier is largely forgotten. After the American Revolution he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica in 1781 and Governor of Madras in 1785. He resigned as Governor of Madras in 1787 and later that same year was appointed Colonel of the 74th Regiment of Foot, one of four new regiments raised for service in India.

Archibald Campbell returned to Britain in 1789 but his life in India had taken its toll on his health and he died in 1791.

This illustration was taken from 'A History of the Scottish Highlands, Highland Clans and Highland Regiments vol. 2' by John S. Keltie (ed.)
