This plan of Tongue School in Sutherland was drawn by the Dingwall architect William C Joass in December 1874. Like many schools of the time, the windows were high (in this case, five feet above the floor), so that the children would not be distracted.

Plans for new buildings or alterations to existing ones had to be submitted to the Dean of Guild court for approval. A guild was a group of merchants who were influential citizens in the burgh, and their president, known as the Dean, had a role similar to that of a magistrate
