COLLECTION NAME: Report on the Education of the Poor in the Highlands
DATE OF ORIGINAL: 1826

The Inverness Gaelic School Society or the Inverness Society for the Education of the Poor in the Highlands was established in 1818. Although they taught reading, writing and arithmetic in English, their primary aim was to teach reading of the Scriptures in Gaelic. This book, published in 1826 contains a report and statistics relating to the state of education in the Highlands.

Report on the Present State of Education in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Retrospect - State of the Highlands before the Reformation.
There appeared to be three different time periods regarding education in the Highlands. The first from the introduction of Christianity to the Reformation, the second from the Reformation to the first settlement of Parish Schools, and the third for subsequent times. During the first period reading and personal knowledge of the Bible was very rare. The Highlands only had a small number of parochial clergy spread over a large area which meant that religious instruction was patchy. Education was also hindered by the lack of books in Gaelic
