The Inverness Gaelic School Society or the Inverness Society for the Education of the Poor in the Highlands was established in 1818. Although they taught reading, writing and arithmetic in English, their primary aim was to teach reading of the Scriptures in Gaelic. This book, published in 1826 contains a report and statistics relating to the state of education in the Highlands.

Investigation by the Inverness Society. The Society aimed to gather accurate information on the state of education in the Highlands. The investigation began in 1822 throughout Argyll, Inverness, Nairn, Ross, Cromarty, Sutherland, Caithness, Orkney, Shetland and the Gaelic districts of Moray and Perth. Four main areas were to be investigated. The first was the number of people over the age of eight who were unable to read. Second was the distance of each family from the nearest school. Third was the proportion of families possessing copies of the Scriptures and fourth was the relative prevalence of the English and Gaelic languages.
