CONTRIBUTOR: Gaelic Society of Inverness (typed pages)
COLLECTION NAME: Sheriff JLM Mitchell (typed pages)

This family tree, headed by Andrew and Murdo Matheson shows the lines to Sheriff James Lachlan Martin Mitchell (1929 - 2001) and his sister, Dr. Harriet Mitchell. It is part of the JLM Mitchell Archive of the Gaelic Society of Inverness.

Mitchell was a native of Inverness and son of well-known doctor, Lachlan Mitchell. After serving as a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Mitchell was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1957. He was appointed full-time sheriff in Edinburgh in 1978 and served there until his retirement in 1995.

Although he spent his working life in Edinburgh, Mitchell retained a love of the Highlands. He spent time travelling round the Highlands in the footsteps of Boswell and Johnson, identifying forgotten sites and taking photographs for an exhibition to celebrate the bicentenary of the 'Journal of a Tour of The Hebrides'. The exhibition began in Parliament House and continued in Inverness for several years thereafter
