On this page of Hugh F Campbell's book about Dornoch Cathedral, there is a continuing account of the veneration of St Gilbert De Moravia's relics. Whilst Dornoch Cathedral was a Presbyterian house of worship at the time, it was originally founded by St Gilbert, who was a Roman Catholic.

After this, there is an account of how a storm destroyed the roof of Dornoch Cathedral in 1605 on the same day that Guy Fawkes attempted to demolish the Houses of Parliament. At the time, both events were blamed on the devil. Perhaps it is slightly ironic to a contemporary reader that Campbell describes attitudes towards the synchronicity of the storm and the powder plot as evidence of a 'superstitious age', when writing an account of a Cathedral, yet in the early 20th Century, interest in ecclesiastical architecture did not presuppose religious belief.

Because the roof of the Cathedral was destroyed, plans to rebuild the roof were implemented in 1614, using local metamorphic rock (rock which has been altered by heat and chemistry).
