Duncan Macpherson opened his pharmacy when he moved to Kyle of Lochalsh in 1912. It was at the junction of Main Street and Station Road, where there were plenty of passing visitors going to and from the station, and the jetty where the ferry crossed to Skye. In addition to the usual chemists' supplies, because he was a very keen photographer, Macpherson stocked a wide range of photographic goods. The front windows of the pharmacy displayed some of Macpherson's own photographs, and posters advertising Kodak products. The shop also acted as the tourist office, with Macpherson selling maps, souvenirs, and his famous Pocket Guide, which included all local information a traveller would need.
