CONTRIBUTOR: St Andrew's Cathedral, Inverness
COLLECTION NAME: St Andrew's Cathedral, Inverness

Alexander Mackenzie attended theological college in Durham, before serving as Deacon and then Priest in Leicester. He came to Inverness in 1911 as Precentor and Assistant Priest of St Andrew's Cathedral, becoming Provost on the retirement of Provost Mitchell-Innes in 1918. He is by far the longest-serving Provost of the Cathedral, being in post for over 30 years.

In retirement he was made an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral and he went to live at Kinellan Lodge, Strathpeffer, but, aged 92, moved back to Inverness. He died in a nursing home in Inverness in 1969, and was buried some six weeks after D. E. Roberts, the Cathedral Organist whom he had appointed in 1920, and who had served for 46 years in that post.
