The houses in the north west Highlands used elements of houses in the Hebrides and in the central Highlands. They tended to have rounded ends like Hebridean houses but had single thickness walls. These houses were usually thatched with straw and bent grass although heather was also used. Cattle were usually housed separately on the mainland. This house was photographed on the Isle of Ewe. It is one of many photographs depicting rural life in the Highlands and Islands taken or collected by the folklorist I. F. Grant in the first half of the twentieth century.

The Isle of Ewe sits in Loch Ewe opposite Aultbea and Inverewe Gardens. The island covers an area of 764 acres and the cliffs on the north west coast rise to over 230 feet. The island was once forested but is now given over to crofting and there was a naval base there during World War II
