The pier in Broadford was built around 1807 by Thomas Telford and J. Gillespie Graham, and the village expanded to become the second largest after Portree on Skye. As the location of a cattle market, inn and limekiln as well as the pier and the main road through the island to Portree, Broadford was the centre for the southern end of the island. Steamers called at the pier carrying freight and passengers, the former being stored awaiting collection in the small buildings which can be seen on the end of the pier. The pier gradually fell into disrepair as motorised transport and the condition of the roads improved, and steamers were no longer the main means of transport on the west coast.
