Portree Bay opens off the Sound of Raasay, almost opposite the middle of that island which can just be seen enveloped in mist in the background. The Bay is one and a half miles wide at the mouth, with distinctive Ben Tianavaig silhouetted on the right and Ben Chracaig on the left, making a particularly attractive gateway to the island of Skye.

Protected from the wind on all sides, for centuries Portree has been recognized as having one of the most sheltered harbours on the West Coast. The construction of a quay in the 1820s, with extensive refurbishment in 1902, ensured the harbour saw a great deal of activity, including passenger steamers, cargo vessels and puffers as well as a daily mail boat service in the summer, and a huge number of fishing boats during the herring season. Large cruise ships are now regularly seen anchored below Ben Tianavaig's slopes
