This postcard shows Strath More, the valley along which the River Broom flows until it reaches Loch Broom. The name Broom comes from the Gaelic 'bhraoin', meaning 'place of rain showers'. The photograph has been taken from Braemore, an estate acquired by Sir John Fowler (1817-98) in 1867.

Loch Broom is a long, narrow sea loch inlet that was once heavily fished for herring. Near the mouth of the loch, Ullapool provides a safe deep anchorage for fishing boats and the Ullapool-Stornoway car ferry.
