Broadford sits at the foot of Beinn Na Caillich, the first of the Cuillins, with origins dating back to the late 18th century when a cattle market was held there. On 20 November 1807, the 'Inverness Journal' contained a notice declaring Lord MacDonald's intention to build a pier at Broadford. The village grew after the completion, in 1812, of the Kyleakin to Portree road, built by Thomas Telford. Steamers called at the pier with mail en route to Portree
